Abstract The integration of multiple energy systems in smart cities is gaining significant attention, driven by the pressing need for transition toward sustainable, efficient, and low-carbon urban development. Integrated Energy Systems (IES), encompassing electricity, gas, and heating networks, play a crucial role in this transition by promoting operational synergy and improving resource utilization efficiency. This paper presents a systematic and comprehensive review of state-of-the-art optimization methodologies for the coordinated short-term operation of IES, with an emphasis on their applicability in urban contexts. First, the review begins by outlining the foundational aspects of short-term IES optimization, including system scales, mathematical formulations, coordination strategies, and prevailing operational challenges. Second, optimization approaches are classified into model-based and data-driven categories, each critically evaluated in terms of methodological advancements, limitations, and real-world relevance. Finally, the paper concludes by delineating future research directions aimed at developing robust, scalable, and adaptive optimization frameworks tailored to the requirements of integrated urban energy systems. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.
