Abstract This chapter explores the future of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and its potential to revolutionize the networking industry. With the increasing demand for agile, scalable, and programmable networks, SDN has emerged as a promising solution that separates the network control plane from the data plane, enabling greater network flexibility, automation, and orchestration. It discusses the key trends and challenges that will shape the future of SDN, such as the rise of 5G networks, edge computing, cloud-native applications, and network security. It also examines the potential impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and blockchain on SDN. The chapter presents several use cases and applications of SDN in different domains, such as data centers, telecommunications, Internet of Things (IoT), and smart cities. It highlights the benefits of SDN, such as improved network performance, reduced operational costs, faster deployment of new services, and enhanced network security. Finally, the chapter discusses the potential risks and limitations of SDN, such as vendor lock-in, standardization issues, and the need for specialized skills and expertise. It concludes by outlining the future research directions and opportunities for SDN, such as improving network programmability, enhancing network intelligence, and developing new business models for network service providers. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Mandeep Kaur, Vishal Jain, Parma Nand and Nitin Rakesh.
