Abstract The aim of the present chapter is to provide a literature review of the concept of Smartness in the field of built environment. The proposed literature review focuses on the urban scale, which today represents the predominant experimentation ground for ICTs application to service management, in order to extract recurring Facility Management (FM) models and processes transferable to the building scale. Moreover, the chapter introduces a critical analysis of case studies of Internet of Things (IoT) application to service management at both urban and building scales (smart cities, smart buildings and EU funded projects) in order to identify best practices of FM information management. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.
