Abstract This chapter explores the potential role of smartphone applications in advancing smart planning within informal urban environments, particularly through the examination of platform urbanism as an emerging concept. Platform urbanism investigates the influence of digital platforms on the configuration and imagination of the built environment. The chapter compares four delivery applications (Swiggy, Zepto, Talabat, and Toters) and investigates how the built environment is reflected through the interface, in turn inviting an alternative approach into smart planning. It proposes an investigation into the use of smartphone applications to facilitate smart planning, examining the types of data that could inform this process. The chapter contends that smart planning, typically associated with governed – or formal – cities, can be extended to informal urban settings through locally developed platform infrastructure. The analysis focuses on the interplay between platform urbanism, smart cities, and informal urban environments, shedding light on the potential for bottom-up, scale-appropriate interventions. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Esmat Zaidan, Imad Antoine Ibrahim, and Elie Azar; individual chapters, the contributors.
