Abstract Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become crucial in the current revolution technology. They are considered the backbone of the future Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities. One of the most frequent problems that happen in these networks is the security of the exchanged data. The reason behind this phenomenon is the existence of intruders. Therefore, intrusion detection is considered an important issue in wireless sensor networks. This paper presents the most recent techniques that are used by researchers in detecting intrusions. The paper focused first on the challenging of this field of research and explore the techniques related to the localization and aggregation issues in wireless sensor networks. It also states the current trends in this area and the modern techniques used for the purpose of intrusion detection. Finally, the paper presents the research trends in WSN intrusion detection. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
