Abstract Purpose: The paper analyzes the effects of smart solutions implemented in social practices on boosting social and human capital and change in the quality of life. Its major objective is to specify the conditions under which smart technologies contribute to increasing depersonalized and institutional trust as components of social capital or public good. Design/Methodology/Approach: Methodologically, the study relies on the conceptions of social and human capital which emphasize the effects of digitalization on the ways people interact and cooperate; reveals the positive correlation between civic engagement and levels of interpersonal and institutional trust. The conception of a smart city proposed by the urbanists in the early 2000s serves as the theoretical basis for the current research into the effects of smart technologies on the quality of life. Findings: The study reveals that smart solutions affect various aspects of life quality (subjective life satisfaction, well-being, improved social climate), are helpful in overcoming passive attitudes; contribute to the revival or formation of new traditions along with the creation of the public good, serve as tools for establishing an active civil society. Originality/Value: Being implemented into social practices and increasing the efficiency of investing in social capital, the technologies are related to applying information platforms as the tools of civic engagement; to developing online-education; to technological change in leisure activities. The systemic application of this group of smart technologies is becoming a significant macro-social process affecting the levels of interpersonal and institutional trust in society due to the spread of crowd-sourcing in the field of social and civic activity. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
