Abstract The fast urbanization and population growth in cities worldwide have led to an increased demand for innovative solutions to address environmental challenges. This article explores the integration of advanced sensors in the development of Smart City Environmental Monitoring Systems (SCEMS) to enhance the real-time assessment of environmental conditions. The primary focus is on the deployment of cutting-edge sensor technologies that enable comprehensive data collection and analysis for air quality, noise levels, water quality, and other important environmental parameters. The article begins by providing an overview of the increasing environmental issues in urban areas and the significance of implementing a robust monitoring system to mitigate these challenges. It then researches into the advancements in sensor technologies; including Internet of Things (IoT) enabled devices, remote sensing technologies, and artificial intelligence-based algorithms. These technologies collectively contribute to the creation of a refined SCEMS capable of gathering high-resolution, real-time data. Furthermore, the article discusses the integration of data analytics and machine learning (ML) techniques to interpret and forecast environmental trends. The incorporation of these intelligent algorithms enables the system to generate actionable insights, facilitating prompt decision-making by city officials and urban planners. Additionally, the article highlights the role of open data platforms in promoting transparency and public awareness by making environmental data accessible to the community. Case studies and examples of successful implementations of advanced sensor-based SCEMS in various smart cities worldwide are presented to illustrate the practical implications and benefits of these systems. The challenges associated with sensor deployment, such as data security, calibration, and maintenance, are also addressed, along with potential solutions to ensure the reliability and longevity of the monitoring infrastructure. In conclusion, this article advocates for the widespread adoption of advanced sensors in SCEMS as a pivotal step toward achieving sustainable urban development.
