Abstract Optimizations in size, battery lifetime, computational power, and transmission range of smart sensors have increased employing smart sensor networks. Smart sensor networks gather and process environmental data in a real-time manner and provide an efficient sensing system. The sensor application continually produces huge volumes of data that need massive low-latency and location-aware computational and storage resources. Edge computing reduces latency by expanding computational and storage resources to the network edge. However, there are still important challenges in using edge technologies in smart cities. In this chapter, we study the use of smart sensor networks based on edge technologies, present a classification, and discuss the advantages, disadvantages, applied tools, main challenges, and open issues related to the subject. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.
