Abstract Although library materials have largely migrated from physical to digital media, the library still sustains its buildings as spaces for recreation, interaction, learning, and knowledge seeking. Intelligent libraries emerge with the development of information technology, Internet, and human-computer interactions. In this way, the library space also becomes a laboratory where users can develop and test intelligent technologies. In the present study, the implication of the smart library in smart cities was analyzed through a systematic search of information, and the best practices of the institutions were identified. The "smart" environment is a broad topic that involves resources, people, and governance, among others, and is treated from different areas of knowledge. The multidisciplinary nature of the library can promote and encourage literacy and the development of new technologies that contribute to various infrastructures, such as sustainable development, improvement in the quality of life, optimization of available resources, and more active citizenship. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Alex Khang, Sita Rani, and Arun Kumar Sivaraman.
