Abstract Smart farming, also known as precision agriculture, is a technological approach that leverages various innovations to optimize the efficiency and productivity of agricultural processes. When integrated with the concept of smart cities, the aim is to utilize technology to improve the quality of life for citizens while enhancing sustainability. Smart farming can be integrated with sensors, IoT devices, internet-based osmosis calculation, AI technology, and blockchain technology. The application of internet-based osmosis calculation of objects in agriculture is a new way to increase the productivity and efficiency of farming methods. Osmotic computing principles, which emphasize distributed and self-organizing computing systems, can be very useful in the context of agriculture. IoT and osmotic computing can work together in agricultural applications in the following ways: The agricultural field is full of IoT devices such as drones with many sensors, weather stations, and sensors to measure soil moisture. These devices continuously collect information about crop health, weather conditions, soil conditions, and other related factors. Fog and edge calculations are combined in osmosis calculations. This encourages data processing closer to the point of creation, at the network and edge. There’s no need to send all data to a central server because IoT devices can preprocess and analyze initial data locally. Making decisions in real time is made possible by reducing latency. Blockchain can provide a transparent and immutable record of each stage of the agricultural supply chain, from planting to harvesting, processing, distribution, and retail. This transparency helps ensure the authenticity, quality, and safety of agricultural products. Several new and emerging technologies are being utilized in agriculture to support the needs of smart cities. These technologies aim to enhance productivity, sustainability, and efficiency while addressing the unique challenges faced by urban environments. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, V.
