| Abstract |
| Globalisation and urbanisation are intrinsically linked, shaping the landscape around the world from cities to smart destinations. The aim of this paper is to analyse the Intelligent Tourism Destination (ITD) approach that is being applied in Latin American countries. The methodology involves a systematic and integrative review of the scientific literature regarding the DTI approach in various cities and regions in different Latin American countries (n=40). The results of this study indicate that most studies focus on technology, followed by DTI as a whole and security. The influence of the COVID-19 context on the increase in research can be observed, as well as the prevalence of urban planning over tourism and the adaptation of the DTI model to meet the characteristics of Latin America. Based on the challenges identified, a research agenda is proposed in the field of DTI in Latin America: support for small and medium-sized enterprises in the context of digitalization; technology and urban sustainability; development of policies for the telecommunications sector; qualification and collaboration between stakeholders; investments in technology and generation of open data. In the end, the study contributes to the advancement to understanding the DTI approach that is being applied in Latin America. © 2025, Universidade de Aveiro. All rights reserved. |
