Abstract Digital twins for smart city. In this work we propose a traffic monitoring and management system that will enable traffic engineers to study the city center traffic congestion and take fast and correct decisions about adaptations of the road network, to successfully relieve a traffic congestion. The designed digital twin consists of three tiers that deal with the sensory of the physical world, the processing of the raw data to provide valuable information, and the visualization of sensed data and the extracted information through real-time animated simulations. The designed system represents traffic volume, rules and regulations, and drivers’ choices. The designed Digital Twin gives the ability to the traffic engineers to simulate virtual traffic scenarios and evaluate possible solutions that will eventually be forwarded to the physical world. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
