Abstract Ethnographic narratives give us a deeper insight into a society. This chapter is based on an ethnographic study conducted in a south Indian city, Kakinada, located in Andhra Pradesh. The research traces the contours of a smart city in the making by looking at changes to the city’s outlook, infrastructure, and appearance. This multi-level study looks at both citizens and the state who are stakeholders in charge of translating the far-reaching vision of a ‘smart city’ for a country like India. Through ethnographic methods, we unveil residents’ expectations and difficulties faced by the Kakinada Smart City Corporation Limited (KSCCL). We establish the challenges involved in urban ethnographic research and how becoming urban or ‘smart’ is a constant process, in the context of sociological literature on contemporary India. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Madhulika Sahoo, S.
