Abstract As cities continue to grow due to urbanization, they encounter numerous obstacles that lead them toward becoming smart cities. Geospatial information technology plays a vital role in smart cities by collecting and analyzing geographic data to improve the transportation and building-energy sectors. Thus, this paper reviews the potential uses of geospatial information technology through three geospatial information technology life cycle categories to determine factors contributing to future technology development and standardization. In addition, this analysis provides future solutions to promote sustainable and efficient smart city services. © 2023 IEEE.
