Abstract This chapter provides the readers with a general introduction to the topic of Smart City, one of the hottest topics in modern sustainability trends nowadays. The authors start with a discussion of the confusion with regard to the exact definition of a smart city, and more importantly, its indicators and means of measurement. Examples of applications in some developed cities worldwide are presented with a discussion of the current state in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) cities and their challenges. The dimensions of these challenges include governance, socio-economic, technological, infrastructural, and human capacity aspects, with their proper integration being an essential element. © Gulf Research Centre Cambridge 2019.
