Abstract Cities play a vital role in tackling sustainability challenges. Smart cities have emerged as solutions to urban sustainability. The key to automating and infusing intelligence into city systems lies in extracting actionable insights from urban data and constructing data-driven models. The major focus is to develop Smart cities with Data science, where data collected from various sources, including sensors, Internet-connected devices, and external inputs, is analyzed to reveal hidden correlations that enhance decision-making and improve services for citizens. Artificial intelligence, particularly machine learning, plays a pivotal role in deepening our understanding of city data, enabling more actionable and intelligent processes across various real-world city services. Additionally, we outline ten open research issues for future development and also research within the context of data-driven smart cities. In conclusion, this study provides a comprehensive conceptualization of smart cities over data science, serving as a valuable reference in particular with technological focus. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Thangavel Murugan and W.
