Abstract Safety in urban areas assumes a central position in the requalification of modern cities or in the planning of future cities. Security problems have a different nature: problems deriving from the mobility of citizens, micro-crimes, terrorism are just a few examples. A smart city equipped with an infrastructure of sensors capable of alerting security managers to a possible risk becomes fundamental for the safety of citizens. Often in cities monitoring systems based on video cameras are used, adding to these acoustic sensors connected to an automatic identification system based on machine learning can significantly improve the security of smart cities. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
