Abstract Many cities around the world have seen their transformation enabled due to their adoption of many smart multimedia technologies that are available to them and characterize their objectives in many ways. It is important to note that smart multimedia technologies and systems in smart cities play a big role in enabling smart cities initiatives. Thus, the smart multimedia systems and technologies must be thoroughly assessed in view of the various security issues that are discussed in literature to critically address the various privacy concerns among the citizens of smart cities. The privacy issues pertaining to smart multimedia systems and technologies in smart cities cannot be underestimated viewing their complexity because the issue of privacy is first and foremost an individual issue as it pertains to everyone in smart cities, but smart cities must discover means to collectively find a solution that addresses both the privacy issues collectively for smart cities and personally for each citizen of a smart city. This paper discusses privacy concerns pertaining to smart multimedia systems and technologies involved in audio, image, and video processing technology as well as proposes a novel approach to addressing the citizens’ privacy concerns in smart multimedia technology data collection through the advancement of machine learning and artificial intelligence by characterizing and personalizing the collected smart multimedia data. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
