Abstract This chapter expands on gendered urban mobility patterns and how urban and transport planning could help to create safer cities for women. Although cities are increasingly recognizing the need to prioritize women's safety in urban public space, there remains a lack of clarity about the way forward. The need to discuss the way forward becomes especially important in light of the global proliferation of smart cities. To be truly "smart," cities must address gendered disparities in urban safety. Otherwise, the promise of neatly packaged technological solutions to complex urban problems, which are embedded in the current discussions on smart cities, might just create circumstances where policy makers end up overlooking the entire gamut of safety and inclusion. This chapter measures the link between gendered safety, gendered urban mobility, and the need for a gender perspective in mainstream planning agendas, especially with the addition of smart technologies. To highlight the systemic nature of these exclusionary patterns, we draw on examples from around the globe to discuss the connections between safety, equity, and liveability. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
