Abstract The development of new digital technologies as part of Industry 4.0 has made it possible to control the supply chain (SC) of smart cities more effectively. The development of digital technologies for managing the interaction between supply-chain management (SCM) and digitalization processes has involved a number of creative initiatives over time. The growth of the SC toward a smarter model utilizing digital technologies like Blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning, etc., is referred to as the “digitalization of the SC.” These innovations genuinely improve and strengthen the capacity for planning, sourcing, and procurement strategy optimization. This study aims to identify the present and possible IoT strategies that can improve both the study and practice of SCM of smart cities in order to fill the current scientific gap of IoT in SCM. Through a thorough analysis of the literature, this study examines the role of the IoT and its effects on SCM. The IoT definition, the possible use of IoT approaches in SCM, the existing SCM subfields with IoT advancements, and various SCM processes and applications are presented as important features of IoT in SCM. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Rajendra Kumar, Vishal Jain, Leong Wai Yie and Sunantha Teyarachakul; individual chapters, the contributors.
