Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) has connected people and smart devices through the internet for a better and smarter future. The number of internet-connected devices has increased five-fold in ten years from 15 billion in 2015 to an estimated 75 billion in 2025. IoT is used in various applications such as smart grids, smart cities, weather forecasting and environmental monitoring and protection through the deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). This paper solves the problem of large energy consumption in Under-water WSNs (UWSNs) by introducing a novel routing protocol that incorporates Twodimensional UWSN and Sleep-scheduling Routing protocol on the surface of an ocean to quickly detect oil traces and timely report them to a Base Station for the environment protection agencies to take adequate measures. The contributions made by this paper are extending the optimization model proposed in [1], solving the model using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) proposed in [2] and extending the MILP algorithm to solve a Multi-objective Optimization problem for early oil leak detection in an ocean. © 2020 IEEE.
