Abstract In urban areas, traffic congestion often causes significant delays in emergency response times, potentially jeopardizing lives. This project proposes an Automatic Lane Clearance System specifically designed to facilitate the swift movement of ambulances through traffic. The system employs a combination of IoT and RF-based technologies, enabling real-time communication between ambulances, nearby vehicles, and traffic signal infrastructure. The ambulance unit is equipped with an Arduino microcontroller, RF transmitter, Node MCU (ESP8266) for Wi-Fi communication, and an LCD display. The system utilizes UBIDOTS as the IoT platform for data logging and monitoring, powered by a dedicated battery supply to ensure continuous operation. When an ambulance approaches a high-traffic area, the RF transmitter signals nearby vehicles, equipped with RF receivers and Arduino microcontrollers, to clear a path. Simultaneously, the system communicates with the traffic signal infrastructure via Node MCU, triggering the traffic lights to display a green signal for the ambulance route. Additionally, a buzzer alert is activated at the traffic signal to notify pedestrians and other vehicles of the emergency situation. This automated lane clearance system aims to reduce response time by ensuring that ambulances encounter minimal resistance in their path. By utilizing an efficient communication protocol across multiple traffic entities, the system promises a reliable and scalable solution for emergency traffic management in smart city initiatives. © 2025 IEEE.
