Abstract Internet of Things (IoT) denotes as one of the wireless communication appliances that are intensively developed. Application of this technology has implemented in many used cases such as smart city, healthcare, smart transportation, agriculture, and others. However, the increase of connected devices in communication systems will lead to scarcity issues on wireless spectrum resources. Thus, the implementation of cognitive radio mechanism in future communication system becomes important. On the other hand, the future communication technology is expected to apply green communication concept as well, so that the system can save energy usage and have self-powered by harvesting the energy from ambient. This paper will provide a literature review of cognitive radio based IoT with energy harvesting mechanism. This review will provide the comparative summary on several focus domains such as RF energy harvesting, spectrum sensing and utilization, and performance metric. Finally, it will address some open research issues for further works. © 2023 Author(s).
