Abstract The last two decades have seen significant shifts in the way disability is defined, configured, and discussed, with critical disability studies (CDS) playing an integral role in this shift. Alongside this expanding discourse, accessibility has likewise been reviewed, contested, and amplified, in part as a result of technological developments and the emphasis on "digital solutions". This chapter considers one location in which disability and accessibility have been redefined - the contemporary urban discourse of the Smart City. This location is intriguing and important because it provides an intersection for CDS, between knowledges of urban access, technology, the normative citizen, and disability. Moreover, it provides an opportunity for CDS to intervene in ideologies of ability, the relationship between bodies and technology, and the socio-cultural construction of access. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Katie Ellis, Mike Kent and Kim Cousins.
