Abstract In the age of Industry 4.0, the digitalization of cities has become increasingly important. This is due to the potential for addressing resource optimization challenges and accommodating the demands of a growing urban population. To address these concerns, it is essential to focus on implementing sustainable smart initiatives. This study aims to identify and rank the factors that impact the implementation of a Sustainable Smart City initiative in Abu Dhabi. Through an extensive literature review, 26 critical success factors were identified. In-depth insight and understanding of these factors were gained through semi-structured interviews with industry experts in Abu Dhabi. The interviewees confirmed the relevance of the success factors and emphasized the significance of Management and Organization, Technology, Governance, and People and Communities. The findings contribute to the objectives of smart cities by enhancing the quality of life and providing efficient and optimal services. The study highlights the importance of addressing critical factors such as End-user involvement, Adequate and innovative funding, Project team skills and experience, and Transparency when digitalizing smart cities. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
