Abstract One of the primary purposes of these sustainable cities is to lower pollution and waste, giving a solution to health hazards and environmental risks. This paper presents an application that shows the level of the primary pollutants and the air quality index, focusing on the city of Valencia, Spain. The objective is to enforce population awareness. For developing such an application, a wireless sensor network-based air pollution monitoring system is presented that follows the three-layer IoT architecture. The locations to place all the sensing devices were determined by initializing a random node grid across the city, grouping such nodes depending on pollutant measures, and performing a k-means algorithm to extract the centroids of clusters. We then evaluated the measurements taken for some districts periodically. Moreover, we considered historical pollutant data since November 2020 for the most critical districts and found characteristic seasonal variations. © 2022 IEEE.
