Abstract There has been tangible growth in the number of vehicles, especially in urban areas for the past few years. This has created a huge parking crisis, especially in city center, hospital, and university areas, where there are limited land resources. To manage such a huge amount of traffic during peak hours is cumbersome and time-consuming. In such a scenario, the automated and technologically driven parking system is the need of the hour in the city, in order to save time and effort while searching for an available space for cars. In India, it is frequently difficult to identify an empty parking space from the entrance, and we may find no space after driving around. The goal is the replacing of such tedious and conventional parking systems with radio frequency identification (RFID) and IoT-based technology. When implementing these techniques, each user is provided with an RFID tag reader for accessing the parking system, though users can also get an Android-based mobile application, from which they can identify a suitable location for parking. This idea falls under the concept of smart cities when considering the green economy in the city area. This system uses multiple technologies to achieve smart parking scalability. It requires high-tech RFID scanners, Wi-fi modules, module motors, IR sensors, microcontrollers, and other electronic components. The inducted microcontroller (Arduino based) continuously reads the sensors located around the parking area and updates this information online over the IoT server, which is used to convert this information and map it onto a graphical format and send the information to the mobile app of that particular user. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Neha Sharma, Jai Prakash Verma, Sunil Gautam, Valentina Emilia Balas, and Saravanan Krishnan; individual chapters, the contributors.
