Abstract Machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, also referred to as machine-type communications (MTC), is the cornerstone of the Internet of Things (IoT) and refers to the communication of smart devices in mobile networks without the need for human interaction. Fourth Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) and Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) infrastructure are now anticipated to be among the promising mobile technology for delivering direct access. This work focuses on smart city MTC. We evaluate a simulated M2M application model for smart city services and applications using intelligently networked streetlights and analyzed packet loss rate (PLR), packet delay budget (PDB), and average delay estimation for huge MTC over mobile networks. The smart streetlight is transformed into a sensor node with multiple sensors competent in gathering and conveying real-time data. Sensors and wireless connectivity are included in a smart streetlight. So every intelligent streetlight node is expected to operate several basic control system services, including mission-critical implementations with stringent requirements criteria of reliability and latency, focusing on cameras for vehicular traffic monitoring. © 2021 IEEE.
