Abstract The introduction of smart cities is poised to improve the quality of life in urban areas through technologies and the employment of modern urban management. Financial literacy is crucial in the social inclusion arena as a reference measuring aspect of this progress. This paper explores how technology-enabled financial literacy can bridge the divide between technological developments and the underprivileged so that all citizens can reap the benefits of smart city innovation. We identify effective methods for implementing educational programs related to understanding digital finance through different cases and actual projects. The strategies include suggestive media campaigns and user-friendly sites, but the most important is the assistance of the state, private businesses, and public organisations. Our findings show that enlarging digital financial literacy gives people the tools to manage finances and leads to more active participation in the digital economy, thus improving economic and social inclusion in smart cities. This case-centred research further emphasises the urgent need for effective and integrated digital financial education programs to develop smart cities for all. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.
