Abstract Governments, researchers, and businesses have all expressed a strong interest in intelligent cities. To enhance people' quality of life and to advance sustainability and effective resource management, they make use of digital technologies. Smart cities aim to improve public services, transport systems, energy efficiency, public safety, among other advantages, through the integration of various technologies, including information artificial intelligence (AI), communication technologies (ICT), and the Internet of things (IoT). The automation of numerous areas, including the smart home, smart environment,, smart economy, smart mobility, and intelligent government, is the focus of these cities. As a result, multi-agent-driven smart cities have drawn a lot of interest from the academic community for their ability to solve complex challenges across a variety of disciplines by allocating responsibilities among numerous agents and enabling them to work together successfully. Although the project of a 'smart city' is a progressive approach to present-day urban settings, there is a growing need to investigate other types of housing, as there may be room to expand the scheme of a 'smart city' to other types of housing Urban. IoTs were created especially to make the Smart municipal idea a reality. This concept aims to use state-of-the-art communication technology to offer inhabitants and municipal administration value-added services. Hence a review of smart city projects is provided, together with analysis of their primary concepts. This also includes IoT application in smart city such as traffic congestion control, intelligent waste management, smart lighting, smart parking, smart wearable healthcare devices and smart educational system. © 2023 IEEE.
