Abstract Lately, concepts of smart cities, intelligent cities, digital cities, resilient cities, sustainable cities and creative cities have been widely discussed among planners and designers. Governments of many developed countries have commenced strategically researching and planning for adoption of these concepts. In principle, these concepts are broadly similar but their precise meaning unclear. Ultimately, smart cities aim to achieve high levels of liveability and sustainability for urban inhabitants. However, they cannot progress without people’s awareness and cooperation. The case for planning strategically for sustainable futures seems indisputable. Many global cities and metropolises have already benefited from new infrastructure and technologies associated with intelligent and smart planning. However, most urban areas in regional conurbations suffer from inadequate transport and digital infrastructure while both play fundamental roles in keeping a town or a city sustainable and smart. The fourth chapter investigates the notion of ‘urban consciousness’ and its relationship with ‘smart cities’, and quality of life. The chapter seeks answers to the following questions: What is urban consciousness? To what extent have urban populations achieved consciousness? What is the role of a smart city in creating a conscious environment? How can we create a smart and conscious atmosphere for urban inhabitants?. © 2018 selection and editorial matter, Simon Huston; individual chapters, the contributors.
