| Abstract |
Pipelines are vital in delivering essential resources such as natural gas and water across all smart cities. Water pipeline infrastructure is particularly important as it not only distributes water across the city but also carries waste water away. However, water pipelines are particularly vulnerable because they can cause severe leakage due to aging or man-made activities such as damage due to nearby road works. The consequences of water leakage range from soil erosion of roads to wastage of clean water or contamination of sewage. To address the challenge of maintaining the health of the water pipeline infrastructure, this article covers relevant technologies such as wireless sensing and the use of AI for preventive maintenance management of water pipelines to minimize water leakage and the risk of contamination across the water pipeline infrastructure. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
