Abstract This study explores the use of solar-powered walkways as creative approaches to sustainable urban development. The research looks at initiatives like the Wattway solar road in Georgia and France and the SolaRoad in the Netherlands through in-depth case studies in the USA, Netherlands, and France. The findings reveal key advantages, including the generation of up to 70 kWh/m2 annually in energy production, contributing to a reduction of approximately 42 kg of CO2 per square meter per year. However, challenges such as high installation costs, durability under traffic and weather conditions, and complex grid integration exist. Key technological and policy lessons include the importance of robust material design, strategic collaboration among stakeholders, and the integration of solar pathways within broader smart city initiatives. These insights are crucial for urban planners, policymakers, and engineers seeking to enhance urban resilience and foster low-carbon cities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
