Abstract The next-generation communication infrastructure offers advanced capabilities to smart cities. The key features of next-generation smart cities are Internet to Everything (I2X) communication, autonomous electric vehicles with the vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication, machine to machine payments, ultra-fast, low latency network for reliable data analytics, and enhanced internet experience with web 3.0. In this paper, we propose a hexagonal smart city infrastructure comprising a three-level hierarchy. We introduce a communication protocol for the proposed smart city topology using beam sweeping technology. We also propose an architecture for I2X communication with different entities in the city. We also discuss a multi-hop wireless network topology for the simultaneous operation of vehicles in the city. A quick mitigation strategy during disasters can support a resilient city network. We further present a mitigation methodology in the case of disasters by considering different degrees of damage to the city topology. © 2022 IEEE.
