Abstract The exponential growth of urbanization has intensified traffic congestion, posing challenges to efficiency, safety, and sustainability in smart cities. This study proposes a blockchain- enabled Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) framework to optimize real- time traffic management by addressing inefficiencies, security vulnerabilities, and scalability limitations in traditional systems. The integration of blockchain ensures data integrity, privacy, and decentralized decision- making, while VANETs facilitate dynamic communication between vehicles and infrastructure. Simulationbased evaluation demonstrated significant improvements, including a 25% reduction in travel times under high traffic density, enhanced data security with over 98% data integrity, and robust scalability accommodating large urban networks. The framework's low latency and resilience to cyber threats underscore its potential for real- world deployment. These findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners to advance sustainable, efficient, and secure transportation systems in smart cities. © 2025, IGI Global Scientific Publishing.
