Abstract The world’s technological development is moving towards the digitalizing phase, and cities are becoming smart with intelligent infrastructure. Smart cities require long signal range with the best link quality and minimal power requirement with maximized capacity; LoRa (long range radio) is the appropriate technology. The mathematical model is derived considering the improved packet transmission time, signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate and channel capacity of the smart city network enabled by LoRa technology. To improve the network, latency is reduced, and link quality is enhanced. The TOA (teamwork optimization algorithm) with respect to different LoRa parameters is accomplished by the PSO (particle swarm optimization) algorithm. The result achieved outperforms compared to non-optimized technology. The simulated result reveals that ToA is reduced by 15.66% for different bandwidth and channel capacity improvised by 2.36%, maintaining link quality with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of approximately 2.41%. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, Vinod Kumar Shukla, Piyush Maheshwari, Purushottam Sharma and Sonali Vyas.
