Abstract The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies within the realm of renewable energy, notably solar power, has paved the way for the creation of intelligent and decentralised systems for enhanced monitoring and fault detection. In this review, we delve into the use of IoTfacilitated remote IV tracing mechanisms to identify and address faults within urban solar power installations. Concentrating on desert environments, where solar power is a cornerstone for sustainable growth, we consider the challenges introduced by dust deposition and its repercussions on solar energy output. We further elaborate on the integral role of IoT in spearheading smart monitoring systems that assess the efficiency of solar panels in dust-affected scenarios. This paper also provides a detailed assessment of a specific IoT-integrated solar monitoring framework designed for expansive and distributed solar provisions in smart cities. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2024.
