Abstract Today, cities are striving toward becoming smart and sustainable at the same time, thus pushing sustainable urban development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are playing a major role in this regard and can act as an action plan for smart sustainable cities. With SDG 11, the importance of cities for sustainable development is emphasized, while SDG 16 entails a target of access to information for everyone. Combining these goals, the availability of open urban data can promote smart and sustainable development in cities and also supply viable data for measuring progress toward the SDGs. Open urban data particularly affects three central pillars, i.e., people, policies, and technology. In this chapter, we consider the prerequisites and possibilities for the provision of open data from these three perspectives. Based on existing open data indices, three national open data portals (Australia, Germany, South Africa) with a focus on the SDGs are discussed. © 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
