Abstract This paper delves into the evolving intersection of electric mobility and energy systems, highlighting the surge in electromobility worldwide and its implications. It emphasizes the necessity for robust charging infrastructures, particularly in urban areas, and advocates for the integration of high-power charging (HPC) stations with energy storage systems. The discussion extends to the broader concept of 'smart cities', where battery electric systems find innovative applications in residential and urban settings. Renewable energy integration, decentralization, and the role of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are explored as key components of this convergence. Furthermore, the paper examines bidirectional charging technologies such as Vehicle-to-X (V2X), encompassing applications like Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), Vehicle-to- Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). Standardization efforts, notably ISO 15118-20, are emphasized for seamless integration of V2X into smart city frameworks and VPPs. Additionally, the authors recognize the potential of renewable hydrogen for fuel cell systems. In conclusion, the paper advocates for digital, intelligent energy management systems that harmonize energy generation, transportation, and distribution with future mobility paradigms. It underscores the importance of sector coupling, advocating collaboration between energy and mobility sectors for sustainable development. © 2024 IEEE.
