Abstract Present streetlight systems have certain drawbacks as they are either HPS or LPS and they are operated manually. The drawbacks are nothing but less efficiency, poor operating life and low efficacy. These lights are either operated on grid supply or on solar power with battery backup. There is a requirement of the hybrid streetlight system which can works on DC supply whenever available from microgrid and can switch to grid whenever microgrid is not capable to cater the load. These hybrid system is to be installed in microgrid and connected to Internet of Things to make a smart streetlight system. Smart streetlight system is one of the emerging technology for a smart city which is low-cost and can consume less power benefiting to pedestrians as well as vehicle users. There are lot many technologies available for smart streetlights like ZigBee, Bluetooth, radio frequency, MQTT etc. MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is the light weight and publish-subscribe based messaging protocol. MQTT based hybrid smart streetlight system is developed and discussed here in this paper. The Graphical user interface is designed using HTML and JavaScript. © 2019 IEEE.
