Abstract An eco-city is a community of people that actively evaluates its own history, status, and possibilities on a path where it identifies problems and generates solutions to (a) become sustainable and (b) have a meaningful role in the global network of cities. Part a requires a lucid look at the so-called knowledge society: we all live within (natural and human-made) complex dynamic systems (CDS), which are characterized by some predictable (and sometimes automatable) behavior between certain thresholds (usually within certain scales) and nonlinear dynamics (with numerous unexpected and side effects) across scales and thresholds. Part b requires a collective introspection so as to understand our own humanity from its origins to the current scientific inquiry and moral questioning, space travel, informed democracy, and potential futures. It is against this backdrop of systems perspectives on sustainability, and as informed by experience in real-life science-and-business projects, that I review the literature on Industry 4.0 and distill a knowledge–action framework, which I use to discuss a selection of examples illustrating smart city technologies, urban renewal, climate changes, and energy transitions, with emphasis on efficiency–resilience tradeoffs. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
