Abstract Study of land use land cover for changes and prediction of changes is one of the thrust areas in remote sensing. The present study deals with the changes in urban area with the help of temporal data available through Landsat-8 satellite for Prayagraj city. A Markov model assisted by cellular automata has been used to analyze the changes in the urban area using the images of the year 2013 through 2018 and predict the growth in urban area for the year 2023. The successive changes in urban area have been examined which deduce that the urban area has continuously grown in the region, however its growth is not monotonic. Since the study area is fixed in terms of the number of pixels, the successive growth of urban area is a result of shrinking of some other kind of land cover. It has been investigated in the study and observed that the urban area grown at the cost of land and vegetation areas as expected. The predicted map of the year 2023 has been obtained as a preliminary analysis of the data using Markov-CA model which shows that the results are promising and need more refinements to predict the exact growth. The work is useful for urban planning, especially the planning and development of smart cities for the future. © 2020 Indian Radio Science Society.
