Abstract The city of UIm, Germany, was among the first worldwide to set up an area-wide and free LoRa network, which could be used by everyone through The Things Network (TTN). With the display of over 20 use cases and real life application examples in the LoRaPark, we aimed to establish a public showcase of this technology to increase awareness and acceptance of such a technology, but also to invite citizens and companies likewise to join the community and realize their applications on this infrastructure. In this paper, we want to share our experiences with building a public sensor network for a smart city and, based on this experience, discuss what is needed to achieve such a goal. We envision that sharing our experiences could raise awareness of opportunities and challenges, and provide useful insights for other cities aiming for similar goals, or even might provide a blueprint for other projects. © 2023 IEEE.
