Abstract There is a dearth of studies on entrepreneurial ecosystems and governance models in the growing context of smart cities. This chapter aims to address this by critically reflecting on the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems, outlining a shift from unsustainable to sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems which calls for the integration of recyclable and regenerative resources within the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This shift is demonstrated by a case study analysis which introduces the concept of a European smart city ecosystem model, developing the existing open innovation participatory ecosystem through the adoption of a more formalized governance structure and selected entrepreneurial ecosystem actors. In turn, theoretical perspectives on entrepreneurial ecosystems are enhanced through the presentation of a new governance model in the context of smart cities which can inform new managerial contributions aimed at facilitating the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the creation of social ventures. © James A.
