Abstract Since 2000, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed very rapid population growth, fast economic development, and increased agricultural production, leading to a sharp increase in demand for energy, water, and food. In effort to meet the ever-increasing demand for these critical resources, the UAE has increased its energy desalination capacities, applied water conservation measures, and adopted diversification strategies across energy sources that extend beyond oil and gas, embracing renewable and nuclear power. The objective of this chapter is to investigate the link between water-energy-food nexus and a smart city in managing these resources in a more sustainable way. Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is taken as a case study. © Gulf Research Centre Cambridge 2019.
