Abstract An intelligent transportation system is an efficient and modern digital approach to access real-time information for drivers, which is pertinent for a future smart city. However, it involves large and federated sensor data and is inherently challenging for data handling, processing, and generating valuable information in classic methods. Big data analytics (BDA) for connected vehicles is capable and scalable to optimize information flow and vehicle safety in their distributed environment based on vehicle location, speed, positioning, and conditions to the neighboring cars in complete and informative information exchange in various circumstances. Leveraging BD for Internet of Vehicles sensor data is parallel processing using selected attributes of vehicle mobility and roadside sensor devices. Hardware platforms provide multi-source data acquisition, distributed computation, and multi-path data communication in an analytical mode to enhance driving performance and safety. The result is visualized in a cluster-based to supply information for drivers and traffic centers. The experiment revealed each car as its cluster center to robust information flow within the cluster members and across the cluster to gain the most probable path or trajectory by accessing shared resources through connected devices and hardware platforms. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
