Abstract Creating an effective data platform for real-time and historical data in urban environments is crucial, necessitating a robust architecture. The platform must seamlessly gather, process, and export data from diverse sensors in various formats to realize the concept of a smart city. It should be open, allowing third parties to leverage its capabilities while ensuring data security. This flexibility empowers innovators to contribute to a smarter city by testing solutions and developing novel applications. The platform’s architecture integrates distributed solutions into pre-existing modules, fostering a composite mixture. It serves as a versatile tool for developing applications that leverage present and historic data for future forecasts and proactive interventions. This chapter provides an overview of the platform’s architectural framework, aligning with requirements and exploring design limitations. Scalability is vital, ensuring the platform can accommodate increased workloads, expanding user bases, and rising transaction volumes without compromising quality. The solution proposes a highly scalable platform collecting data from various smart city sources, accessible through secure APIs. The architecture emphasizes redundancy, distributing workloads across hosts through a modular design. This ensures the platform’s persistence and scalability, crucial for effectiveness in smart cities with substantial and increasing data volumes. The chapter covers the motivation, challenges, seamless security integration and the importance of persistence and scalability in the context of modern, data-intensive urban environments. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Susheela Hooda, Vidhu Kiran, Rupali Gill, Durgesh Srivastava, Jabar H.
