Abstract The ubiquitous connectivity and decision-making capabilities of intelligent devices have paved the way for the integration of Internet of things (IoT) to numerous applications, especially in a smart city. Intelligent control of street lights using real-time information of weather and traffic data is an emerging application of IoT in smart cities. In addition, the sustainability goals of modern smart cities necessitate effective strategies to achieve energy-efficient operation. Integrating IoT-enabled street light control technologies with demand response applications can help in reducing electricity consumption. In this regard, the proposed research develops a framework for intelligent control of smart street lights based on weather data, traffic density and demand response signals. The framework optimises the number of street lights in a certain area that should be turned off or dimmed to reduce energy consumption according to the demand response signal. The developed algorithm considers the cloud cover and visibility and defines priority thresholds for individual streets based on traffic density data. The proposed technique is evaluated numerically in terms of reduction in energy consumption 184under different weather condition scenarios for a real-life case study in Victoria, Australia, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed framework in IoT-enabled demand response applications. © 2023 Anshul Verma, Pradeepika Verma, Yousef Farhaoui and Zhihan Lv.
