Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT)Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as a powerful enabler in many application domains, such as water and energy management, environmental monitoring, health, smart cities, smart industry, and supply chain management. The IoT has the potential to address some of the most acute human, economic, and environmental needs. It can also directly contribute to achieving the targets in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This chapter sheds light on the role of IoT at the European, international, and research levels in supporting the SDGs. First, it provides an introduction to the SDGs and discusses their importance and historical evolution. In a later stage, the chapter discusses opportunities to support the global UN Agenda from the research perspective, by delving into the research challenges to support the Green Deal objectives and the SDGs. The section is followed by an analysis of the actions taken at the standardization level in the field of smart cities and the contribution to the SDGs. Finally, the chapter presents the IAM4SDG methodology – a holistic tool for evaluating the risks and opportunities of any given project or activity on the SDGs. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
