Abstract This research study investigates the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain technologies in improving waste management systems in urban settings. Traditional waste management must improve by efficiently monitoring waste bin fill levels, often leading to environmental pollution and public health risks. An IoT-based system was proposed that utilized sensor technology to monitor bin statuses in public and residential areas. These sensor nodes, Public Level Waste Monitoring (PLWM) and Home Level Waste Monitoring (HLWM) collect data on fill levels and location, which is then transmitted for analysis. A blockchain management system was also incorporated to ensure data security and transparency. This system was evaluated through comprehensive testing and evaluation processes, assessing sensor accuracy, data transmission time, network reliability, and user interface usability. © 2023 IEEE.
